I love to weave. Sitting at the loom, watching the fibers interlock to create color mixes, patterns, texture and usable fabric – this all makes me happy. My weaving began about 14 years ago with a simple two shaft floor loom. Heavy & noisy. Since that time, I’ve had 5 different floor looms and woven on frame looms & ridged heddle looms. They all provided new and varied experiences and taught me so much! Today I enjoy an 8-harness Eeva Toika loom that consumes most of my studio space.
My weaving studio is in our home, providing a simple setting with room to create. My work typically focuses on functional items: towels, rugs, pillows, scarves, wraps and more. My use of fibers varies but I make every effort to use materials that are sustainably produced and that will last for the user. My inspiration for projects often comes from our beautiful area – Lake Superior, a walk in the woods, or simple stones. Colors & patterns inspire.
Every warp I put on the loom allows for 6-12 inches of sampling, trying out different ways to manipulate the weft and color play. I tend to put long warps on the loom (7-10 yards). This is simple efficiency and allows for variation and play between each item. I love the “what if…” mode where simple exploration can provide exciting results.
My goal is that my weaving projects useful and enjoyed. And I will experience joy as I continue to expand my skills and grow in my work. Enjoy!
